Fragonia

Agonis Fragrans

Fragonia Oil is a sweet, spicy oil which helps with pain and inflammation relief, particularly for muscle and joint pain. It boosts the immune system and can also work well against jet-lag, so if you're a frequent traveller this would be a great oil for you.

History of Fragonia Oil

Fragonia Oil comes from the plant family Zygophyllaceae and is native to Australia, specifically Western Australia. It is a shrub that produces a calming and beautifully fragranced oil that can target a number of internal and external health problems. It was discovered in the 2000's in Australia, so its history is in fact quite limited. Its properties are likened to Tea Tree Oil, and the oil was discovered during a time where Tea Tree Oil had dropped in price. Distributors were forced to grow other plants to create essential oils, and by accident discovered Fragonia Oil.

It is stated that John and Peta Day from Paperback Oils in Western Australia had discovered the oil, as the plant had not been named yet. It was known as a species of Agonis, and only after John and Peta had started to plant and grow the shrub did they realise how beneficial and beautiful the oil was. There is nothing to show how it was named ‘Fragonia’ but that is what it is known as in the essential oil market! Since then, there have been clinical trials which have confirmed the oils antibacterial and antifungal properties, which has made it a popular oil across beauty, healthcare and alternative medicine today! Around 20 years since its discovery, it’s clear that the oil has had a huge impact on the essential oil industry.

So, why is Fragonia Oil so popular?

It doesn’t have hundreds or thousands of years of history to back up its properties, but modern research and trials have demonstrated its veracity and power as an essential oil. Being native to Australia has its benefits, as research shows that it is still only grown in Western Australia. This has allowed Australians to have the opportunity to be a sole distributor, which has been a huge boost for their essential oil industry. Unlike Boronia Oil (also native to Australia), Fragonia Oil can be used for more than just perfumery, which has enabled it to be a part of multiple industries quite quickly. Overall it’s a beautifully scented and extremely powerful essential oil that is still in the early stages of its popularity, and is something that we think and hope will flourish in decades to come within the industry.

Extracting Fragonia Oil

Like most essential oils, Fragonia Oil is extracted through a process called steam distillation, which involves using steam to gently lift the oil from the twigs and leaves of the plant. The oil then collects on top or at the bottom of the condensed water, where it is later removed. It is a non-invasive and highly popular method as it doesn’t damage the essential oil and enables the distributor to have a high yield from each batch. There are other methods of extraction such as cold pressing or using alcohol, but for Fragonia Oil steam distillation is the best method.

Can I make Fragonia Oil at home?

Providing you live in Western Australia and have access to the plant then yes, you can. If you don’t - then we recommend buying the oil instead! This isn’t because it’s a hard oil to make, but it’s because so far Western Australia is the only place that grows and makes Fragonia Oil. Due to it being a ‘new’ essential oil and only being discovered around 20 years ago, it hasn’t had the opportunity to be tried and tested in other countries on a mass scale.

It is one of few essential oils that is not just native to Australia, but is only distributed by Australia! Boronia Oil is an example of this, as it’s exclusively produced in Tasmania and Australia - and it looks as though Fragonia Oil will also follow suit. Overall it’s an oil that is loved by many, but unless you own a steam distillation unit and live in the right location, you can just buy a bottle online instead.

Fragonia Oil Varieties

Fragonia Oil Varieties

Fragonia is in the plant family Zygophyllaceae as well as in the family of Mertaceae; however the varieties of Fragonia Oil are not defined due to the fact that the oil is still considered new. Its Latin name of Agonis Fragrans will be disclosed by most suppliers (all of which are in Australia) which will indicate that it is in fact the fragonia plant that is used to make the oil. With Australia acting as a sole distributor, they ultimately have control on the variations that they have as well as where it can be grown, which limits the varieties of Fragonia Oil that can be made available.

So, which variety of Fragonia Oil should I use?

Unlike many essential oils on the market, Fragonia Oil is still considered new, and variations of the plant have not yet been used to create other varieties of the essential oil, therefore creating a limitation on which type of Fragonia Oil you can use. However, what we do recommend is buying the oil from an Australian retailer, as there is no evidence to support that fragonia grows in other parts of the world. If you are buying from a third party supplier be careful and check whether the Fragonia Oil you’re buying is 100% pure to avoid disappointment.

There is still a fair amount of research being done on Fragonia Oil, and we do anticipate that there will be more varieties in the future, but for now - you can enjoy the oil as long as it is 100% pure and from an Australian retailer (if possible).

Benefits of Fragonia Oil

Fragonia Oil is considered a ‘new’ essential oil , native to Australia, it is a fragrant and powerful essential oil that has been likened to Tea Tree Oil. Over the years it has been trialled and tested and was clinically proven to prove its antibacterial and antifungal properties.
