Carrot Seed

Daucus Carota

Carrot Seed Oil is an earthy and full bodied oil which has a number of health benefits and healing properties. It is antibacterial, antimicrobial and also a great antioxidant. It's popular in aromatherapy to reduce feelings of stress and anxiety, and used in topical applications improving the skins complexion and texture.

History of Carrot Seed Oil

Carrot Seed Oil is derived from the tiny, dried seeds of the Daucus carota plant - a white, flowering, biennial plant in the family Apiaceae or Umbelliferae, commonly known as the celery, carrot, or parsley family. Daucus carota, whose common names are wild carrot, bird’s nest, and, of course, Queen Anne’s lace, is native to temperate regions of Europe and southwest Asia. The Romans ate this plant as a vegetable, American colonists boiled its taproots, sometimes in wine, whereas the Irish, Hindus, and Jews used it to sweeten certain foods due to its high sugar levels.

It is believed that the ancient Greeks, Romans, French, Indians, and Egyptians were the ones who discovered the beauty and power of Carrot Seed Oil.  Some of them even combined Carrot Seed Oil with Bergamot and/or Lemon Oil to create an effective treatment to reduce inflammation and ease indigestion. Additionally, Carrot Seed Oil has found its way into traditional Chinese medicine (it is used as a bath or massage oil to assist with muscle pain) as well as into the manufacturing of “Oriential” perfumes due to its rich, warm, earthy aroma.

Why is Carrot Seed Oil still around?

We are extremely proud to have Carrot Seed Oil in our essential oil selection. Its warm, earthy, and herbaceous aroma has a soothing and grounding effect, which explains why this oil helps with feelings of fatigue, weakness, anxiety, and stress.

Carrot Seed Oil may not be as “hot” as Lavender or Eucalyptus Oil, but its popularity is definitely on the rise. This is because this essential oil has so much to offer. Thanks to its antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, stimulant, anti-inflammatory, tonic, antiseptic, and antiviral properties, Carrot Seed Oil can do wonders for our health. It can help kill certain bacteria and fungi, including dermatophytes, cryptococcus neoformans, alternaria alternata, E. coli, salmonella, Candida, and Acinetobacter.

Carrot Seed Oil can repair the existing oxidative tissue damage and prevent oxidants (free radicals) from doing further harm. In addition to these amazing health benefits, Carrot Seed Oil can give the skin a firmer and fresher look by helping the body remove toxins and water build-up in the dermal tissue and promote natural sun protection of between 24-35 SPF. No wonder this oil is King in the world of skincare products.

Carrot Seed Oil is often used in aromatherapy. When diffused, it can relieve feelings of stress and anxiety as well as promote a sense of well-being. Unsurprisingly, this oil is an incredible stimulant too. It can boost both circulation and metabolic function, meaning it can be a great ally when dealing with menstrual cramps or dyspepsia (indigestion).

Extracting Carrot Seed Oil

Carrot Seed Oil is steam-distilled from the tiny, dried seeds of the Daucus carota plant, commonly known as wild carrot, bird’s nest, and, of course, Queen Anne’s lace. This white, flowering, biennial plant is a member of the family Apiaceae or Umbelliferae - a.k.a. the celery, carrot, or parsley family. Steam distillation is one of the most popular methods for extracting and isolating essential oils from plants. This process occurs when dry steam is passed through the plant material. The steam vaporises the plant material’s volatile compounds, which eventually go through a condensation and collection process. One of the key advantages of steam distillation is that it generates organic solvent-free products.

The colour of Carrot Seed Oil is golden yellow/amber to pale orange-brown, its consistency is thin to medium, and the intensity of its initial scent is medium to strong. Some people find Carrot Seed Oil’s aroma a bit harsh. Luckily, this small unpleasantry can be easily overcome by blending Carrot Seed Oil with other essential oils and nourishing carrier oils.

The main chemical constituents of Carrot Seed Oil are: carotol, alpha-pinene, dauca-4,8-diene, beta-caryophyllene, and (E)-Dauc-8-en-4B-ol.

Can I make Carrot Seed Oil at home?

Technically, yes. However, you’ll need to invest in steam distillation equipment and do the necessary research on the whole process. This can be a time-consuming adventure for some. In case spending money on brand new essential oil-extracting equipment isn’t an option for you, you might succeed using a large pot with a lid, distilled water, and, of course, fresh plant material to fill the pot about half full. Please bear in mind that your final product’s quality might not be as good as the one of its commercial counterparts. If you don’t want to risk it, we advise you to look for 100% Pure Organic Carrot Seed Oil online.

Carrot Seed Oil Varieties

We, the Essentially Yours team, are committed to learning and sharing our knowledge, tips, and tricks to help you deepen your understanding of aromatherapy and essential oils in general. Whether you are considering adding a certain oil or blend to your collection and want to learn its dos and don’ts or you are simply curious about the various methods of oil application - we’ve got you covered. In this particular blog, we are going to focus on the difference between Carrot Seed Essential Oil and Carrot Seed Carrier Oil especially as these terms are often interchanged.  In addition to this, we are going to introduce you to Carrot Oil as often Carrot Seed Essential Oil is commonly mistaken for this.

How to differentiate Carrot Seed Essential Oil from Carrot Seed Carrier Oil?

  • Carrot Seed Essential Oil is extracted via steam distillation from the tiny, dried seeds of the Daucus carota plant - a.k.a. wild carrot, bird’s nest, and, Queen Anne’s lace. Its scent is warm, earthy, and woody. It features naturally occurring constituents such as carotol, alpha-pinene, dauca-4,8-diene, and beta-caryophyllene. This essential oil is primarily used in skincare due to its antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, anti-aging, and anti-inflammatory properties. Carrot Seed Essential Oil is widely used in aromatherapy as it can reduce feelings of stress, anxiety, fatigue, and weakness. Just like other essential oils, Carrot Seed Essential Oil should be “weakened” with a carrier or base oil before applied to the skin and is intended for external use only.
  • Carrot Seed Carrier Oil is made by infusing a vegetable oil with cold-pressed seeds of the wild carrot plant. This is the key difference between Carrot Seed Carrier Oil and Carrot Seed Essential Oil. Carrot Seed Carrier Oil is often used in cosmetics due to its anti-aging properties. It can be used as a tonic for the skin, as a base for aromatherapy blends, and as a powerful addition to skincare products. Both Carrot Seed Carrier Oil and Carrot Seed Essential Oil are rich in antioxidants, which means they can help protect against disease. When it comes to purchasing Carrot Seed Carrier Oil, it’s important to check the base vegetable oil to make sure there aren’t any contraindications.

What about Carrot Oil?

Carrot Seed Essential Oil is often confused with Carrot Oil, but these two are completely different. Carrot Oil is the result of mixing crushed carrot roots in a carrier oil (Olive and Coconut Oil are the most popular choices in this case). Carrot Oil is high in vitamin A, but it doesn’t provide an essential oil. The consistency of Carrot Oil is slightly greasy, whereas Carrot Seed Essential Oil’s consistency is viscous but non-greasy. Unlike Carrot Seed Essential Oil, Carrot Oil can be used for culinary purposes.

Benefits of Carrot Seed Oil

At Essentially Yours, we pride ourselves on doing the necessary research to deepen our understanding of aromatherapy and essential oils in general. This enables us to help you pick the best oils, blends, and methods of application for your wants and needs. We believe that familiarising you with our products, the numerous benefits they offer, and the adverse side effects that occur when they aren’t properly used is the least we can do, hence these blog posts. In this particular blog, we are going to introduce you to some of the most significant benefits of Carrot Seed Oil - an oil we’ve fallen deeply in love with.

Carrot Seed Oil, often hailed as a wonder oil, offers many impressive health benefits. It can:

Rejuvenate the skin

Since Carrot Seed Oil is super high in antioxidants, it may serve as a rejuvenator for aging skin in cosmetic products. In other words, this essential oil can minimise the appearance of wrinkles. Carrot Seed Oil can help flush toxins and water retention in the dermal tissue, nourish
the skin and promote an evenly-toned complexion,
balance the skin’s oil production, and tone the skin by enhancing its elasticity.

Promote natural sun protection

Even though it’s believed that Carrot Seed Oil can promote natural sun protection of between 24-35 SPF, it’s important to know that it cannot do the trick on its own. It must be a part of a carefully developed natural sunscreen recipe. Additionally, Carrot Seed Oil can soothe sunburns and calm inflamed or irritated skin. If you want to find out more about this, please read our ‘Uses for Carrot Seed Oil’ article.

Assist with certain types of skin ailments

Carrot Seed Oil might reduce or relieve the symptoms of eczema, psoriasis, skin ulcers, boils, and carbuncles. To harness this benefit, you’ll need to use this oil in a bath or massage blend.

Repair oxidative tissue damage

Carrot Seed Oil is rich in antioxidants, meaning it can repair the existing oxidative tissue damage as well as provide strong protection against oxidants (free radicals), i.e. stop them from doing further harm. One study suggests that this essential oil might also have benefits against liver damage.

Support emotional balance

Thanks to its soothing scent, Carrot Seed Oil might relieve stress and anxiety as well as promote a sense of well-being. This is why it’s widely used in aromatherapy.

Help kill bacteria and fungi

Thanks to its powerful antibacterial and antifungal properties, Carrot Seed Oil can combat several strains of bacteria without damaging underlying skin cells as well as reduce the activity of fungi. Some of the bacteria and fungi that appear to be most affected by this amazing oil are: dermatophytes, cryptococcus neoformans, alternaria alternata, E. coli, salmonella, Candida, and Acinetobacter, many of which are common in developing countries. Some experts believe that this oil may serve as an effective weapon against these illnesses, but only if developed properly.

Please keep in mind that Carrot Seed Oil is not recommended in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Uses of Carrot Seed Oil

Although often underrated and overlooked as a staple, Carrot Seed Oil boasts many desirable therapeutic properties, which is exactly why we believe it deserves so much more attention than it currently receives. The powerful beauty of Carrot Seed Oil can be experienced in a number of ways, including:

In a diffuser

Carrot Seed Oil is widely used in aromatherapy due to its grounding, soothing, and refreshing scent. When diffused, it can relieve stress, calm the anxious mind, and diminish feelings of fatigue and weakness. To reap these wonderful benefits, we suggest blending 3-6 drops of Carrot Seed Oil with a carrier oil (we recommend Avocado Carrier Oil) and Bergamot, Cedarwood, Geranium, Lavender, Lemon, Orange or Sandalwood Essential Oil. If you don’t own a diffuser, consider adding
5-10 drops of Carrot Seed Oil to 2-3 cups of boiling water.

In a natural moisturiser

To create a nurturing and moisturising facial serum, you’ll need an empty 15 ml bottle, 10 drops of Carrot Seed Oil, 10 drops of Geranium Oil, 10 drops of Tea Tree Oil, 10 drops of Copaiba Oil, and Jojoba Carrier Oil. First, you’ll need to pour all the essential oils into the bottle and then fill to the top with Jojoba Oil. Apply a few drops of this lovely serum to your skin in the morning and before bedtime. If you don’t want to manufacture a moisturiser from scratch, consider increasing the effectiveness of your favourite face cream or serum by adding 1-2 drops of Carrot Seed Oil to it.

In a sunscreen

Carrot Seed Oil can be a useful addition to your sunscreen, so feel free to add a drop or two of this oil to it before you head out the door.

In a bath/massage blend

To prepare a relaxing and therapeutic bath, mix 5 drops of Carrot Seed Oil with 2 drops of Cedarwood Oil and 2 drops of Rose Absolute. Pour this blend under warm running water into your bathtub. To treat and protect damaged skin, you can dilute 3-5 drops of Carrot Seed Oil with 1 teaspoon of your preferred carrier oil (we suggest Coconut) and massage the blend into the skin once or twice every day. To soothe sun-irritated skin, combine 5 drops of Carrot Seed Oil with ¼ cup of Aloe Vera Gel and smoothe the blend over the affected area.

Blends well with

Often underappreciated and overlooked as a staple, Carrot Seed Oil is a powerful essential oil, especially when it comes to nurturing mature and damaged skin as well as killing dangerous bacteria and fungi. Carrot Seed Oil boasts many therapeutic properties and can be paired with a lot of wonderful essential oils. Our favourite ones are: Bergamot, Cardamon, Cedarwood, Clove, Geranium, Juniper Berry, Lavender, Lemon, Lime, Orange, and Sandalwood Oil. Let’s take a close look at some of Carrot Seed Oil’s friends.

Bergamot Oil

This citrus oil possesses a uniquely complex aroma with underlying bitter and floral characteristics. Since both Carrot Seed and Bergamot Oil can reduce feelings of anxiety, stress, and fatigue, they can form a beautiful and, more importantly, relaxing duo. Bergamot Oil can balance Carrot Seed Oil’s scent, which can be unpleasant for some. To create a more soothing blend, you can bring Lavender Oil into this equation. Just mix 1 drop of Carrot Seed Oil, 3 drops of Bergamot Oil, and 4 drops of Lavender Oil, and then pour the lovely trio into a diffuser.

Cedarwood Oil

Cedarwood Oil’s woody, balsamic aroma has a calming and comforting effect. Just like Carrot Seed Oil, Cedarwood Oil possesses antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, meaning it can be beneficial for certain skin conditions. It’s reported that Cedarwood Oil can alleviate and reduce acne breakouts, soothe symptoms of eczema, diminish the appearance of scars, and protect the skin against environmental pollutants and toxins. Yes, Carrot Seed and Cedarwood pack quite a punch together.

In addition to this, these two essential oils work nicely with Sandalwood Oil and Jojoba Carrier Oil. To create a hydrating and fortifying dry hair oil treatment, combine 6 drops of Carrot Seed Oil, 2 drops of Cedarwood Oil, 4 drops of Sandalwood Oil, 1 tablespoon of Jojoba Carrier Oil, and 2 drops of your favourite light, fast-absorbing carrier oil. Massage the blend into the scalp and let it work its magic for 1-2 hours before you wash it out with your regular shampoo.

Geranium Oil

Geranium Oil is yet another incredible essential oil that blends well with Carrot Seed Oil. Its sweet, floral scent is both calming and uplifting. One of the traditional uses of Geranium Oil is to support the circulatory system, which explains why it’s believed that it can soothe symptoms of menstruation and menopause. To ease menstrual cramps, consider diluting 4 drops of Carrot Seed Oil, 4 drops of Lemon Oil, and 2 drops of Geranium Oil in 1 tablespoon of Coconut Carrier Oil and rubbing the blend into your abdomen in a clockwise motion twice a day for a week.
